He produced <em>a pink checked pocket-handkerchief<\/em>, even though he had no pockets, and blew his nose.<\/p>\n<p>Jason lisped, &#8220;I won&#8217;t bless you unless you get dressed. Aren&#8217;t there any clothes in that bag?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tessa giggled. &#8220;What, are you going to force him to put them on?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ideally <em>the operation is undergone voluntarily<\/em>,&#8221; Jason replied. &#8220;He still has that option.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I was still deciphering the message John had imparted via my feet. This code wasn&#8217;t from the Academy. It was our private channel, one we&#8217;d both hoped we&#8217;d never have to use.<\/p>\n<p>Tessa grabbed John by the ankles and dragged him away from me. &#8220;You need to tell me your story,&#8221; she said to him. &#8220;Tell me how you ended up in there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He made the soiled kerchief disappear and said, &#8220;I would tell you everything, <em>but, baby, I don&#8217;t want to bore you<\/em>. It&#8217;s such a long story, you&#8217;d feel like you were staring at a blank screen waiting for a website that won&#8217;t come up even after you <em>reloaded at least twice<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I needed more time to work out the message he had given me, preferably while he kept Tessa and Jason distracted with his story. So I said, &#8220;You owe the lady some kind of explanation. All of us are curious, I&#8217;m sure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well,&#8221; he said, reaching into the duffle, &#8220;like all the best stories it begins with a woman.
